Central Scotland receive £4.5 million to upgrade digital connectivity
By World Infrastructure Journal-
More than 5,300 premises in central Scotland are to receive faster broadband speeds through a £4.5 million grant from government.
This is the first instalment of the £5 billion UK Gigabit Programme which aims to reach 85 per cent fibre coverage by 2025.
These 5,300 identified properties which will benefit from the scheme are across Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Fife, Stirlingshire, Greater Glasgow and Lothian.
These areas were already supposed to have their coverage upgraded through the Scottish Government’s Reaching 100 programme (R100) which is investing £83 million in central Scotland alone.
Plans were combined so these areas will now receive Fibre to the Premises gigabit connection instead. Gigabit connectivity can reach speeds of 1,000 megabits per second compared to the Superfast speeds offered through the R100 programme which has a minimum speed of 30 megabits per second.
This move should hopefully allow these premises to meet the next generation of technologies. The Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) said this will “fool-proof internet connections in these areas for the next thirty to forty years. "
UK Government Minister for Scotland, Iain Stewart said:
“It’s great news that Central Scotland has been announced as the first area to benefit from the UK Gigabit Programme, and pleasing to see the UK and Scottish governments working together in partnership to level up communities.
The UK Government will spend more than £5 billion to help those in areas that need improved connectivity most. This will help us to build back better from coronavirus and create new jobs and economic opportunities. ”
Further areas which will benefit from the Gigabit Programme will be announced in due course. UK Minister for Digital Infrastructure Matt Warman said about the latest announcement and the future programme:
“The first pound to be spent from our £5 billion pot for gigabit broadband will be in Scotland.
That’s because it is our mission to deliver lightning-fast next-generation internet connections to all parts of the UK as we build back better from the pandemic.
And this is just the start. Other areas of Scotland and the rest of the UK will benefit from our record investment in this national broadband upgrade and we’ll announce more regions shortly. ”
